Information & Initiatives for Transfer Students

University College helps to coordinate some programs that are specifically aimed at transfer students, particularly those in their first year at UNC Charlotte.  If you are a transfer student, you know that lots of things about the university are a bit more complicated because you've studied somewhere else.   You are bringing credits in from somewhere else that don't quite fit in our boxes, you may be a bit older than most of our new students, you may have questions about majors and requirements that need expert assistance.   In University College, we may not be able to completely fix that, but we hope to be able to provide you with some assistance in making things work for you here at UNC Charlotte.

Probably the most important resource to help you navigate the system at UNC Charlotte is your advisor.  For all University College Students your advisor will be someone in the University Advising Center.  If you have declared a major, you probably need to meet both with an advisor in your department AND an advisor in your college.   The reason is that students with transfer credits need to make sure that they get all the credit they deserve, and each of these advisors will have a particular perspective on your credits that may help you out.

Also be sure to attend a Transfer SOAR session if you possibly can.  While you might feel as if you know your way around a university, the Transfer SOAR experience is specifically designed to get your questions answered so that you make a seamless transition (ok, as seamless as possible) to UNC Charlotte.

[NEW for Fall 2008]
In order to better support new transfer students, University College is piloting two options for Fall 2008 that you may want to consider:

1) Transfer Seminar
This fall, there will be two sections of a special transfer seminar.  Designed specifically for new transfer students, these seminars will provide a chance to get connected to students, faculty, and facilities on campus.  As an added bonus, the Transfer Seminar (UCOL 1011) will satisfy your ‘Oral Communication’ goal (O) for General Education

How to Join
If you are interested in a transfer seminar, let your advisor know during your SOAR visit and they will assist you in getting registered.

2) Transfer-only sections of General Education courses
This fall we will offer a handful of sections of required General Education courses specifically for transfer students.  These will be classes where you will have a chance of meeting students like yourself and where the faculty member has specific knowledge about the kinds of questions that transfer students tend to ask.   (As of this update, the specific classes for Fall 2008 have not been identified. Please check back later for more information or ask your advisor.)

How to Join
If you are interested in a transfer-only section of a General Education course, let your advisor know during your SOAR visit and they will assist you in getting registered.
